A Message from our Secretary General
Esteemed delegates, respected directors and distinguished guests,
First and foremost, a warm (and tropical as well as humid) welcome to the FOBISIA Model United Nations (MUN) Conference. My name is Thuy Duong Dang, and it is an absolute privilege to be serving as your Secretary General at this year’s FOBISIA MUN. It has been fourteen years since the Millennium Summit was convened by the member states of the United Nations. This summit set out the foundations of eight Millennium Development Goals, eight goals that had the intentions to make the world better for human kind. As a student from an international school, privileged with the fortune of having access to education and many other luxuries that those less fortunate in society can only dream of affording, there is a duty to alleviate the suffering of those who are malnourished of attention and help. Though the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) may seem like they do not concern us, they very much do. It is our reaction to these eight commandments that define us. It is whether we choose to understand them or not that defines us. It is whether we choose to contribute towards the problems they highlight that defines us. As the Secretary-General of this conference, there was an inner calling to divert the attention of all participants to the MDGs that will end next year. Whether there will be an evaluation of the MDGs themselves or not is a matter which we know not yet. But regardless, we ourselves must spend time to reflect and evaluate our actions, of those around us and of humankind as a whole. What matters is that we ask ‘Are we on the right path?’ and ‘where are we heading next?’. And so it is my hope that this year’s FOBISIA MUN can be an eye-opening experience for newcomers, and for those more experienced, another opportunity to demonstrate their passion for debate and further extend their existing knowledge of politics and current affairs. Most importantly, it is my greatest wish that delegates, with opinions different or alike, will come together and exchange ideas through exciting debates, as well as get to know each other outside the council rooms so that this conference may be a most enjoyable and rewarding experience for all its participants. |
a few words from our deputy secretary general
Esteemed advisors, staff members, student officers and most importantly honorable delegates,
It is an immense honour to welcome you to the FOBISIA Model United Nations Conference of 2014. My name is Bum Jin Joo and for the 3 days of your stay I will be supporting each and every one of you, the delegates,as the Deputy Secretary General of the FOBISIA MUN 2014, and it is my utmost pleasure to do so. My MUN career began 3 years ago at ISMUN as a delegate representing China. Reflecting now, I recall how difficult and tiring my first conference was due to my lack of knowledge of conference procedures and protocols. However, we have to look on this as a natural process that everyone goes through. Furthermore, we have to take into account there are no winners or losers in a conference, if we are to say there are winners in a debate, it would be to say that the winners are the ones who actually learn from their mistakes and develop further by gaining both confidence and knowledge. I really look forward to every single delegate coming out as a true winner during the debates. Our hosting of the FOBISIA MUN will be my 9th MUN conference. I have to say every aspect of the MUN has enlightened me as to how the world is run and allowed me to discover the qualities that I have, which have now become a pre-eminent part of who I am as an individual. As the Deputy Secretary General I promise, alongside my Secretary General, to make this Model United Nations Conference an unforgettable experience. |
